A Divided Nation Then Thoughts on Ecumenical Councils

Home » Blog » A Divided Nation Then Thoughts on Ecumenical Councils
James White, March 18, 2025March 18, 2025, Christian Worldview, Church History, Debate, Eastern Orthodoxy, Post-Evangelicalism, Roman Catholicism, The Dividing Line

Reflected on the deep division that exists in Western Culture today and in the United States in particular, and then moved on to some of the Jay Dyer stuff and the continued need to have an in-depth discussion on the “7th Ecumenical Council,” aka Nicea II.

Radio Free Geneva: Reviewing Pastor Eric Hankin’s NOBTS Chapel Sermon on Election

James White, November 6, 2013October 6, 2020, The Dividing Line

Today on an edition of Radio Free Geneva (which included our newly re-done Radio Free Geneva theme!) I reviewed a sermon by Pastor Eric Hankins preached September 26, 2013 at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary on the subject of election.  In this sermon Hankins basically seeks to reduce the concept of election to merely a call to service after salvation,

  • Augustine on Christ’s Bodily Absence

    TurretinFan, December 31, 2004August 23, 2018, Roman Catholicism

As we previously identified (link), Augustine had no concept of a continued bodily presence of Christ on Earth after the ascension. A very simple modus tolens logical argument shows that Augustine was not a Roman Catholic, in the sense of holding to the modern Roman Catholic view of the Eucharist. The argument is this: Premise 1: If Augustine were a

  • On the Sinfulness of Calling Apostasy…Apostasy

    James White, November 11, 2007August 20, 2018, Roman Catholicism

Some comments were made regarding the ever-developing Beckwith saga (including Frank Beckwith posting canons from the Council of Orange) here. Beckwith dares to reduce the issue of Rome’s gospel to mere theories regarding imputation versus infusion. Another comment was left by Dr. Michael Bauman, accusing anyone of sin who would identify Beckwith as an apostate. I provide here the comment

  • From Claire de Lune to Jonathan Merritt to Rome’s Dogmas About Mary

James White, June 29, 2020June 29, 2020, Christian Worldview, Church Fathers, Church History, General Apologetics, Homosexuality, Post-Evangelicalism, Racialism, Roman Catholicism, The Dividing Line

Went an hour and 45 minutes today because we “covered the waterfront.” Talked about how Twitter is saying the Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel is a dangerous website (could be a technical glitch, could be purposeful), and then discussed how we can have confidence that God’s truth abides with us today. Discussed Jonathan Merritt’s 1 minute video, looked

  • Here Are the PDF’s for the Textual Criticism Programs

James White, February 5, 2007July 10, 2020, The Dividing Line

I have stayed up late enjoying myself immensely examining the wealth of high quality digital images of Codex Sinaiticus this evening…well, morning. I will be posting some images in the morning to illustrate one of our variants. Anyway, I have two files. The first contains just two pages from the UBS 4th text. The introductory remarks are so diffuse that

    A Thought from St. Peter’s

    James White, May 20, 2005January 16, 2013, Roman Catholicism

I forgot to add this to my brief recounting of visiting St. Peter’s in Rome. As I was looking at all of the crypts and memorials, statues and monuments, to dead popes and their alleged accomplishments, I could not help but think of Shebna in Isaiah 22:15-18: Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, “Come, go to this steward, to

  • A Two Part DL Today: Islam, and Roman Catholicism

James White, July 16, 2009August 17, 2015, The Dividing Line

Two very different halves of the program today. First half I went through comments made by Osama Abdullah in a recent exchange with Nabeel Qureshi. I demonstrate that Osama continues to demonstrate his incapacity to present an even semi-credible and coherent argument against Christianity and for Islam. Then after the break “Brother Peter” called in. Evidently he’s written a book
